Why family and friends matter

At Autism Plus, we believe strong relationships are the foundation of a good life. The people we support often tell us how important it is to stay connected to their loved ones — and we couldn’t agree more.

We recognise the vital role that family members, friends, and trusted people play in a person’s wellbeing. That’s why we work together, where welcomed and appropriate, to build support that strengthens these important relationships.

We also understand that navigating support services can be overwhelming. Our team is always here to listen, answer questions, and offer guidance to families and carers.

How we work together

We’re committed to making families and friends feel informed, involved and respected, always with the permission of the person we support.

Here’s how we support strong connections:

  • Regular communication and updates (with consent)

  • Invitations to planning and review meetings

  • Signposting and support for families and carers

  • A welcoming, inclusive approach every step of the way

“It’s not just my brother who is supported – we all feel part of it. The team at Autism Plus truly listen and work with us. It means the world to know he’s supported by people who genuinely care.”

Staying connected: Paul's story

Paul moved into supported living with Autism Plus in 2022. At first, his family worried about how the transition would affect their close relationship. But regular communication and visits reassured them.

Paul’s team invited his family to review meetings and helped Paul plan activities to stay in touch, including video calls and family trips. Two years on, Paul is thriving, and his family still feel connected every step of the way.

"I never thought we would ever see (family member) choose shopping and put it in a trolley in the supermarket, or go to a carvery and get things put on their plate, but this is happening."
