Autism Plus Hub Takes Part in Community Art Project During Learning Disability Week

19 June 2026

Trainees attending the Autism Plus Hub in Knaresborough have taken part in a special art workshop as part of Learning Disability Week 2026, contributing to a national campaign that promotes the importance of safeguarding vulnerable adults.

The workshop formed part of From All Walks of Life, a community art project supporting a campaign led by Fiona Laskaris. The initiative aims to raise awareness of safeguarding and highlight the importance of ensuring vulnerable adults have the support they need to make informed decisions, maintain their independence and stay safe within their communities.

The Autism Plus Hub provides training, work experience and personal development opportunities for young adults with autism, learning disabilities and mental health conditions. Through a range of tailored activities, the Hub helps individuals build confidence, develop new skills and work towards greater independence.

This year's Learning Disability Week theme, "Do You See Me?", focuses on visibility, inclusion and recognising the valuable contributions that people with learning disabilities make to society. The art workshop gave participants the opportunity to explore this theme creatively while taking part in a wider community project.

The From All Walks of Life artwork uses images of people walking together to represent unity, shared experiences and collective action. During the session, participants designed their own footstep cards using a variety of craft materials, creating unique pieces that will form part of the larger collaborative artwork.

The activity encouraged creativity, self expression and teamwork, while also providing an opportunity to discuss inclusion, safeguarding and the importance of ensuring vulnerable people are seen, heard and valued.

"There really is something special about my job, to have the privilege of making a real difference in someones life and helping that person to live their life the way they want to, it doesn't get much better than that."
