Finding a Place That Feels Like Home

Everyone’s journey is different, and sometimes it takes time to find a place where you feel settled and understood. This is Sarah’s story, shared with her family’s permission, and shows what can happen when the right support and environment come together.

Sarah grew up in East Yorkshire as the youngest of five children. Family life was busy and familiar, and she enjoyed the comfort of everyday routines. She liked spending time with puzzles, watching television, and being around the people she knew well. Christmas was always something she looked forward to, opening presents and enjoying the excitement that came with family traditions.

As an adult, Sarah experienced some big changes. After her father died, and later when her mum developed vascular dementia, it was no longer possible for her to live at home. Over time, Sarah lived in several care settings across Hull. While her needs were supported, it did not always feel like the right place for her.

Since moving to Autism Plus residential services in Thorne, things have felt different.

Sarah has grown in confidence and is more comfortable expressing herself. Staff and other people living there describe her as warm, friendly, and someone who brings a calm presence to the home. She is known as an individual, valued for who she is, and enjoys being part of everyday life.

Sarah’s family remain close and involved in her life, and alongside the support she receives, she now has stability, connection, and a place where she feels at home.

Her story is a reminder that with the right support, people can feel settled, understood, and able to live life in a way that works for them.

“It was extremely helpful having Autism Plus workplace assessment to help us in working with an individual diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, giving us a better insight of the syndrome so we could offer more appropriate support. The assessor was knowledgeable, understanding of the circumstances from a business perspective and really tried having a full overview of the situation. The report came back to us within the promised time frame and full of recommendations on how to best accommodate the individual needs, which was really thorough and supportive.”
